Gonorrhea/Chlamydia Detection Test

Gonorrhea/Chlamydia Detection

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. It primarily infects the mucous membranes of the reproductive tract; including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women, and the urethra in women and men. Many people with gonorrhea are asymptomatic, which means they don’t show any symptoms of infection. If there are symptoms, they typically show in two days to five days in males, with a possible range of one to 30 days. In females, symptoms develop within 10 days of infection.

Chlamydia is a common STI that infects both men and women. It can cause serious, permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive system, making it difficult or impossible for her to get pregnant later post infection. Chlamydia can also cause a potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that occurs outside the womb). Chlamydia is also known as a ‘silent’ infection because most infected people are asymptomatic and lack abnormal physical examination findings.

HIV/Syphilis Detection Test

HIV/Syphilis Detection Test

HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, and can lead to AIDS if not treated. The infection most often presents as a short, flu-like illness that occurs 2-6 weeks after infection, and afterwards, may not cause any symptoms for several years.
Syphilis is a bacterial infection that normally spreads through sexual contact. The disease starts as a painless sore on your genitals, rectum or mouth (sexual contact areas) and is spread when an uninfected person’s skin or mucous membrane comes into contact with these sores.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that HIV and Syphilis detection tests are included in your regular STD screening.
